Coconut Oil: produced by the expeller cold pressing method of the coconut milk/meat, white in

Castor Oil : Rincinus communis, a vegetable oil usually obtained by cold pressed method of the castor plant, colorless to a pale yellow tint, boiling point is almost 600 degrees F, used in detergents, soaps, lubricants & plastics among other industrial applications, possible other uses include insect repellent, sunburn relief, skin irritation, contains ricinoleic & oleic acids, raw seeds of castor plant are extremely toxic and should never be ingested but the commercially pressed oil is safe to use, found in “Buggz Off” Desert & Jungle insect repellent balms.

Neem Oil: Azadirachta indica, is a vegetable oil cold pressed from the seeds & fruit of the Neem tree which is an evergreen native to India, color is brown and the consistency is medium, the odor is very strong, used in detergents, oaps, hair shampoos, other possible uses include insect repellents, contains linoleic acid, oleic acid & hexadecanoic acid among many other compounds, should not be used by pregnant women, found in “Buggz Off” Desert & Jungle Skin Balms.

100% Natural Plant Butters

Plant butters are natural sources of fats that are either solid or semi-solid at room temperature and with a high monounsaturated triglyceride content. The plant butters are also known as vegetable butters and consist primarily of saturated fatty acids. In order to produce plant butters a specialized process of expeller pressing of the seeds & nuts is the first step in its extraction process. The next step under controlled conditions is the refinement and filtration of the raw materials that have been extracted. Sometimes there is even a deodorization step if a less noticeable odor is required such as with shea butter and cocoa butter.

Some other well known plant butters are almond, aloe, avocado, shea , cocoa , soy and even mango. Many of the plant butters are derived from nuts and unfortunately some people have nut allergies. The capuacu butter we use in our lip balms is derived from an South American nut which may cause an allergic reaction in a very small percentage of the population. If this happens please return the lip balm as per the instructions on the safety page.

Cocoa Butter: Theobroma Cacao, meaning “food of the Gods”, harvested in Africa, Expeller Pressed/Unrefined, Shelf life is at least 1 year , unrefined cocoa butter is lightly odoriferous, it is used for food and cosmetics & in culinary products, especially chocolate. Color is Light Yellow, Odor is slightly resembling chocolate, consists of free fatty Acids- 1.08%:(Oleic- 29-35%, Palmitic- 20-30%,Linoleic- 1-3%) & polyphenol Cocoa Butter is becoming increasingly popular in the natural body care and cosmetic industries . It has been used for centuries in Africa for its moisturizing and healing properties, where it has been used to protect and condition skin which has been damaged by the sun and wind. Safety Precautions: with serious or persistent skin problems, such as eczema, person should be seen by a physician before using Cocoa Butter. Cocoa Butter is often mistakenly used by people to expedite a suntan and while it will enhance a natural tan, it does not have a sun protection factor (SPF). To prevent the harmful effects of the sun, use a suntan lotion with an SPF of at least 30 that contains Cocoa Butter.

Shea Butter: Butyrospermum parkii , found in many parts of Africa, expeller pressed/unrefined, it’s shelf life is at least one year , because it is unrefined the scent of this butter is a bit strong but it is pleasant when refined, it is able to be directly administered to the skin and will soften & even melt, as with all the butters store in a dark, cool location. Color variations are grey/off white/yellowish, consists of fatty acids(Oleic- 47.5%, Palmitic- 3-9%, Linoleic- 2-9% ,Stearic- 38% ) Shea Butter is popular in the natural body care and the cosmetic industry. It has been used for centuries in Africa for its moisturizing and healing properties, where it has been used to protect and condition skin which has been damaged by the sun and wind, it also has anti-inflammatory properties, does have some SPF protection but not enough to adequately protect the skin.

Capuacu Butter: Theobroma grandiflorum , origin is northern Brazil, cold pressed, it has at least a 2 year shelf life, it has a creamy consistency, very mild scent, contains many phytosterols that help stabilize emulsions & possibly help treat eczema & dermatitus.It also consists of fatty acids( Oleic Acid 43.9%, Stearic Acid 30.8%, Palmitic Acid 7.2%, Araquidic Acis 11%, Linoleic Acid 4.6%)It has a high capacity for water absorption due to these sterols which means Cupuaçu Butter is an excellent emollient. It helps with the softness of the skin and improves the elasticity of the skin especially ones that are in the mature stage of life, It can be used for all types of skin care, hair care and as a ingredient in cosmetics such as lip sticks.

Essential oils are basically the pure essence of the plant which includes the seeds, leaves, stems, buds, berries and flowers. Essential oils are usually extracted by steam distillation. Other processes include solvent extraction, CO2 and cold press. The various essential oils are used in cosmetics, perfume production, food flavoring, incense and even cleaning products.

Essential oils have also been used medicinally since the dawn of man in various forms. In the absence of antibiotics and modern medicine essential oils were used for many types of ailments, injuries and other health conditions by all cultures and types of people around the world. In fact, many of the drugs that we use today are just synthesized versions of essential oils such as aspirin which is naturally derived from birch bark.

In recent years the renewed interest in essential oils has been spurred by aromatherapy and other holistic alternative medicine practices. The basic concept is that the medicinal properties of the essential oils can be better utlized by inhaling the specific aromas which are spread into the air, diluted in a carrier oil and massaged into the skin or even ingested in small amounts. There are many claims associated with aromatherapy and ingesting the essential oils which have not been approved by the FDA. This does not mean that the essential oils do not help or even heal many conditions. It’s just that we don’t have total scientific proof of all the benefits that the essential oils can provide.

Since the essential oils are for the most part lighter than water they have a unique ability to readily absorb into the skin so it is strongly recommended that no pure essential oil be used directly on the skin because serious irritation may result. If you are going to use an essential oil on your skin the oil should be diluted in some type of carrier oil base. Also, there are many essential oils that should never be used in aromatherapy, holistic medicine, massage oils and balms.

All the oils listed below are ones that we have carefully researched and utilize in our specialty balm products. Each and every essential oil has a specific purpose based on its medicinal qualities and its ability to blend with other essential oils to create a superior balm. The amount of essential oils used in each specialty balm is dictated by the specific purpose of the balm and the amount of carrier oils, plant butters and beeswax needed to dilute the essential oils to a skin safe level.This means that Best Balms specialty balms are safe to use as per our product instructions for each balm product and on the general products information page. In addition we also source our essential oils from all over the world some of which are cultivated, wild harvested and organic grown. Since we use so many different oils it is impossible to specify only organic because of the different conditions and countries that they come from. We do do our best to insure that the oils we use are from environmentally friendly sources.

Allspice Oil: Pimenta officinalis, steam distillation, yellowish red/brown color, aroma is very strong with a rich spicy scent, used for arthritis, bronchitis, colds, coughs, cramps, dental infections, fatigue, flatulence, indigestion, muscle cramp, nausea, neuralgia, rheumatism, viral infections & stress, contains eugenol, methyl, cineol & phellandrene, possible dermal and mucous membrane irritation in large undiluted amounts, avoid during pregnancy, found in Ultra R-X Plus, Mani’que & all the Ultra Sports Balms.

Arnica: Arnica Montana, solvent extracted & also infused, color is yellowish, aroma has bitter overtones, medium to heavy consistency, used for sprains , bruises, arthritis and inflamed skin, contains phlorol & dimenthyl ether, is potentially toxic if taken internally in large amounts and should not be used in undiluted state on open wounds, found in Ultra R-X Plus & Ultra Sports Balm in infused mixture.

Balsam, Peru: Myroxylon pereirae, steam distilled, dark brown color, consistency is very thick, aroma is sweet & fresh, used for bronchitis, chapped skin, colds, coughing, eczema, flu, poor circulation, rashes & sensitive irritated skin., contains: cinnamyl cinnamate. possible skin sensitization in undiluted state, found in Ultra R-X Plus , Feminique Ultra Blend, Ultra Epi-D, Ultra Sports Balm.

Bay, Laurel : Laurus nobilis, steam distilled, golden yellow color, consistency is thin to medium, aroma is medium to s trong with a fruity & spicy aroma. used in hair care, oily skin, for poor circulation, sprains, strains, .contains eugenol, myrcene, chavicol, methyl eugenol, found in Ultra R-X Plus & Ultra Sports Balm

Benzoin: Styrax tonkinensis, solvent extracted, golden brown color, consistency is very thick and hard, aroma is a very light woodsy vanilla. used for arthritis, bronchitis, chapped skin, coughing, laryngitis, stress. contains benzoate, benzoic acid, vanillin, siaresinolic acid & cinnamyl benzoate, possible skin sensitivity and contact dermatitis in undiluted state, found in Ultra Epi-D.
